Have you thought about all the skills you will need to master before sitting your exam? I would not be surprised if you have studied your material, told yourself you need to read the question, made sure you can turn up in time at the exam hall, and even gone through some past papers. But there is more to preparing for exams than this. There are also a number of “softer” skills that you need to have mastered before you set foot in the exam hall – if you don ’t, you could be seriously reducing your chances of success.
1 Time Management
Over and over again, as an examiner, I see candidates producing really good papers, and then I come across the first part of a question really well answered, and the second part not attempted at all. It is such a crying shame, and there is nothing I can do about it. If a question is not attempted, I cannot give it any marks – simple. And on most occasions, the candidates have simply run out of time – some even say so on their answer sheets!
Whatever you do – do not fall into this trap, because nothing compromises the marks awarded more than questions not attempted or only partially attempted. Believe me, it ’s the one thing that can make a difference between a strong paper getting a high mark and barely passing. And it could so easily be avoided with proper time management.
Time management in an exam situation consists of two key components:
Making sure you leave enough time to answer all of the questions you need to; and
Devoting the time in proportion to the marks available.
Master these two key skills and you will be well on your way – even if that means not answering some questions as comprehensively as you would like to. You are better off answering all the questions moderately well than answering one brilliantly but having no time for the others. Remember, there are only so many marks available for each question, and you cannot create any more.
2 Writing Skills ( I mean, with a pen)
Yes, with a pen, because this is still the means by which many exams have to be answered. We are not in the age yet where all exams are answered by using computers. Imagine an exam hall with 100 people all tapping away on laptop keyboards – that would drive the invigilators crazy!!!
So if you have to write, make sure you can do it quickly and clearly. If you do not feel you can do this, then practice until you can. Do not underestimate how much physical effort is required to write solidly for three hours. If you have not done it for a while, it will hurt!
Also, make sure without fail, that your writing is legible. Your answer could be brilliant, but if the examiner cannot understand it, you will not get the marks you deserve. If I can ’t read it, I can ’t mark it. And most examiners will not spend time trying to decipher your writing when they have lots of other papers to mark.
3 Reading and understanding
I never understand why candidates are told repeatedly to read the question. What is the point of that? I ’m sure every candidate reads a question before attempting it – and then many go on to answer a completely different one!
No, what candidates should be told to do is the following:
Read the question carefully to make sure you understand both what is required in your answer and how your answer can gain the most marks.
That ’s what reading the question really means! So make sure you practice how to do this when going over your past papers. And on the day of the exam, use your reading time before the start of the exam for this purpose – that is why you have it.
4 Organising yourself – and your materials
There is nothing worse than not being organised going into an exam. This is not about just getting a good night ’s sleep the night before and making sure you arrive at the exam room on time.
If your exam is an open book, then make sure you have the key materials that you need and resist the temptation to bring the whole course manual into the exam room along with all your additional reading material. Quite often the benefits of open book exams are quite limited. If you are going to be writing continuously for three hours, how much time do you really think you are going to have to flick through your reference books looking for that elusive fact? Stick to the fundamentals, and write them on flashcards if it will help.
5 A positive attitude
This is the one that is not talked about very much. Do not let yourself get sucked into the trap of wondering if you have done enough, worrying if the right questions will come up, or even worse, freezing when you turn over your question papers because you don ’t think you can answer any of the questions. If you have prepared thoroughly for the exam (which I am assuming you have) then do not let negative thoughts like that creep into your mind. If you have prepared properly and thoroughly, then just stay calm and remember you have the wherewithal to pass. Why not practice it by creating a mock situation for yourself with some old papers?
